Spooky Cycles hail from the east coast (Connecticut to be exact) and is probably best known for their mountain bikes and hardcore image. They’ve had a few BMX models out for over a year now (previously under the “Spit” name), but have kept things pretty low-key¿that is, up until now.

The guys over at Spooky are fans of the New York/Connecticut hardcore music scene. Their hardcore influences show in their “Underdog” frame. The Underdog is completely made out of 4130 chromoly tubing. It’s got a solid, clean, and simple design. It’s not over-built, but it’s strong. Looking it over you’ll find 1/4″-thick laser-cut rear dropouts, and a small gusset tucked under the down tube. The frame also features cantilever brake mounts (suitable for V-brakes) as well as the normal seat stays cross-brace with a hole drilled out for standard caliper brakes.

The angles on the Underdog are all pretty normal and average with no surprises. After a day of riding we found it to be solid and predictable. Basically, it’s a great race/trails bike for anyone who loves chromoly. And just in case you don’t like chromoly and feel the need to ride aluminum, Spooky makes the Underdog available that way as well¿both in 7005- and 6061-series aluminum ($425, and $375 with SE forks respectively).

The Underdog chromoly comes only in gloss black and is sold with SE’s famous Landing Gear forks. This combination sells for only $250¿a pretty good deal for anyone looking for a new ride. Watch for more from Spooky throughout the new year. They plan on doing a lot with their race bikes, and will also be coming out with a chromoly jumping frame within a few months.

“Smooth design with no kooky angles or extra tubes. Really clean and professional.”¿Tim Strelecki
