Today was the first day of riding on the Red Bull Dirt Conquers course. Practice was all about figuring out lines and how to ride the beast. And with many sections, multiple entry points to the course and its obstacles, and everyone itching to ride, it was slightly hectic and definitely awesome. No collisions, but some close calls. The course is fun, fast, and there are a number of big transfers and hips to blast, including in and out of bowls. Since the whole thing was essentially shovel smacked and packed, it’s far from a typical park course. Unlike ramps or concrete there are little imperfections, varying transitions, and occasional loose dirt (from cases and crashing) to deal with and keep you on your toes, and keeping speed is tough if you miss a backside. Some guys were ripping right away and others took their time trying to figure out what worked for their riding.

Practice was a short couple of hours because Red Bull had a tour of a tequila distillery planned for us, and I rode for half of practice, so I only got about a dozen decent shots for today’s coverage. As I’m typing this (Friday night) it’s pouring rain and has been for hours. Saturday’s practice is not looking good with the amount it’s been raining—guaranteed it’s taking a toll on the course, but hopefully the sun is out and things aren’t too wrecked in the morning. Fingers crossed…
