What was once a grassroots music festival, South By Southwest has turned into a corporate shitshow that takes over Austin for two weeks in March every year. Ten years ago you might’ve seen the next big thing with 50 other people, and now it just seems like you sell your email to corporate America for free drinks and tacos. When every .com and hashtag company spends all their money on elaborate venue takeovers, Vans tied up with the Pro Cup series and Thrasher quietly absent this year, South By was almost shit out of luck for anyone wanting to ride some ramps while drinking free beers this year. In steps Brad Byrne, aka Puck, an Austin transplant from Virgina and organizer of PuckPuckPuck Fest. When you’ve got a punk rock work ethic, a PA system, a parking lot and a truckload of pallets, shit gets done so fun can be had. With ten bands and a quarter made out of about as many pallets, the good times were rolling all afternoon and into the night. The energy during the high air/best trick contest while the headline band played was unreal, culminating with Cody Cox pulling a seriously unreal wallride out of the quarter. Between the music, the ramps and the riding, a couple hundred people’s Saturday was easily made. Here’s to next year and doing it your-damn-self!
