YEEEEEEEEEEHAWWWWWWWWWW!!! The General Lee has returned!
Back in the late 90's, DK was primarily known as a race brand, but the General Lee "jumping frame" put them on the map as more than just a stem manufacturer. Modeled after the famous Dodge Charger from "The Dukes of Hazzard", the General Lee was coveted by trail riders worldwide, and even Dave Freimuth adapted the trail geometry as his daily ramp rider. Over the years, the GL has evolved from an aftermarket frameset into an entry-level ride (and even a cruiser), but 2015 brings a return to form, this time as a high end complete bike.
Making it's return as a high-end complete bike means that the new General Lee is no longer made with hi-tensile steel tubes; full 4130, internally butted & tapered chromoly tubing comprises the Duke boys' theoretical ride, including the bars & fork, which also comes with a 1-piece CNC'd steer tube. Geometry on the new model is a bit more modern; gone are the 14+" curved rear stays, replaced with straight tubes and measuring in at 13.6", the rear end is ready to spin faster than Roscoe's patrol car while in hot pursuit. A 75 degree head tube with an integrated headset is a somewhat moderate angle compared to many tech street frames of today, and the 11.9" bottom bracket height is incredibly manual-friendly. "Hugger" orange paint & distinct graphics made the General Lee one of the most recognizable vehicles ever built, and we see the original paint scheme reproduced here (minus the stars & bars, woof). DK adds its own special touches in the form of a 3D head tube badge, and a laser-cut star rear seat stay brace.
Although the look really defined the General Lee, it couldn't fly through the air like it did without the proper drive train, and the same goes for the complete bike. DK gets you moving with a set of their Social chromoly cranks, featuring heat-treaded 4130 arms, a 48-spline spindle and a sealed mid bottom bracket. The DK Khan sprocket clocks in at 26t, giving you a little more speed when you're ready to launch, and their PC pedals will soften the blow on hard landings & slipped pedals. You can't cruise without wheels, and the General Lee rolls along on a set of black WISE double-wall 36 hole rims, featuring sealed bearings, female axles and a 9t driver in the rear. Tires are provided by fellow Ohio brand Kenda, in the form of all-purpose 2.25" Ticket treads, and you'll skid to a stop with the WISE alloy u-brake and lever combo. Not feeling brakes? Get rid of 'em fast with DK's removable brake mount setup.
DK made its mark in the trail scene with the original General Lee, but they got their start in BMX with their original top load quill stem, so it's no surprise to see their new Chamberlain stem is a callback to their roots. I don't think I ever saw the Duke boys wearing anything but denim, so it's fitting to see the WISE Tripod seat get the same treatment. DK did an amazing job building the new General Lee, and if you want one, you better reach out to your local dealer fast, as these were produced in very low numbers. Priced at only $649.95, you don't need to be Boss Hogg to afford one, either.
The General Lee is available now, so hit up www.dkbicycles.com and find a local dealer today while you still can.
